I know it is probably very cold where you are and even more so depending on the zone that you are in but there are still a couple of things that we can do around the garden to keep it up to date and in good shape for the upcoming spring season right around the corner. We will be going through six tasks and small projects that you can take on in small increments to make sure your garden is ready but also keep you from freezing outside!
- Make sure that your winter protection is still up to date.
- Any fleece or netting that you might have surrounding your plants is still intact and doing any repairs or maintenance before the weather gets too cold or much and you can’t make those changes.
- Clean your tools!
- We talked about this in a previous post see [here] but if you haven’t already done so make sure that you have cleaned or are in the process of cleaning all of your gardening tools and oiling the up properly so you can keep intact that longevity.
- Mulch the space around your plants.
- This helps keep the ground around your plant warm relative to the frigid temperatures that the wind may bring.
- Cover your new fruit trees or easily susceptible plants with a tarp or other covering.
- this will help stave off some of that wind and snow that your area may experience and not cause premature deaths to those plants that easily get frostbite.
- Complete any structural jobs you might have left.
- Though it is cold outside, this might be the best time to get these projects done as you don’t have to compete with your plants and can actually fix and manage things like fences and gates that were in hard-to-reach places during the spring.
- Organize you seeds and plan
- This is perfect activity that you can do indoors but still contribute to the success of your garden. Take the time to plan out your spring garden and organize your seeds.
For now, though, I hope you have some things that you can do and mark off as tasks this winter! Make sure to wear all the clothes to keep yourself warm and take the steps to keep yourself safe! Remember that a little goes a long way and not to push yourself farther than you need to, this time is for slowing down and reflecting!
Until next time, as always, Plant with a Purpose! – BTR
