In an earlier blog post I talked about using the USDA Plant Hardiness Map as a tool to know which type of plants will be the most successful in your garden. When I was doing some research I stumbled across a different type of map called the ecoregions map and you can find the website for that [here]. But on this map it breaks down the regions of North America (if you are in a different country, I’m sure you can find a map for your continent) and breaks down all the different types that you might find in your area. This show us a more intimate view of our area and allows us to be more specific when it comes to the varieties of plants that we are putting in our gardens not only because they work best for the soil type but also because they probably are beneficial to the native animals in your region.
Below I will post a picture of the Level 1 Ecoregion Map for you to take a look at:

Now on the website you can go all the way down to a Level 3 which breaks down the eco regions even more. Once you have figured out what region you are in then you can find resources that will guide you to the plant varieties that have the highest percentage of surviving your particular region. Not only will it help those plant survive but it also aids in the bio-diversity of your garden and the future strength that your plants will have in the future.
Sites like American Meadows [here] and Pollinator.org [here] are great resources to look into after you have found what eco region you are apart of. Both site have full lists in PDF forms that can help start your journey in finding the right plants for your garden!.
For now, though, I hope you have an additional resource when thinking through any plants that you are adding to the garden! Remember that there are tons of resources out there that will help guide you in your pursuit of a healthy garden!
Until next time, as always, Plant with a Purpose! – BTR
